About Work Permit/LMIA
Canada offers various work-related opportunities for immigrants. Every year many immigrants come and work in Canada that adds to their economy on temporary or permanent basis. The employer must get a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) before the submission of application for Work Permit. An LMIA is a document from Employment and Social Development Canada/Service Canada that allows an employer to hire a foreign worker through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).
The Work Permits are generally quite restrictive and can be of following types:
- Open Work Permit: You may be eligible to apply for Open Work permit if you:
- are an international student who graduated from a designated learning institution (DLI) and are eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program
- applied for permanent residence in Canada
- are a dependent family member of someone who applied for permanent residence
- are the spouse or common-law partner of a skilled worker or international student
- are the spouse or common-law partner of an applicant of the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program
- are a refugee, refugee claimant, protected person or their family member
- Employer specific Work Permit allows you to work according to the conditions imposed on Work Permit by IRCC which may include:
- Name of the employer
- Duration of Work, and
- Location where you can work (if applicable).
